You disagree with the feedback you received

Example situation

During a review of one customer update, you say it lacked a recommendation. The team member says they were asked to present options without choosing one.

Our recommendation

Check the disputed event, expectation, or requested change with the team member. Correct inaccurate feedback, resolve conflicting instructions, and explain any expectation that still applies.

Manager

If you are the manager

Ask: “You understood the assignment differently. What were you asked to prepare?” Look at the update and the original request together.

If the request asked only for options, withdraw the criticism: “You followed the request. I expected a recommendation but didn't ask for one.” State the requirement for the next update. If the recommendation was requested, ask the team member to show where they included it or explain what prevented it.

Explain why a recommendation is needed for this decision and examine their concern about making one. They may need information, authority, or coaching. Ask follow-up questions based on their answer until you understand the objection.

If your meanings remain unclear, ask: “What do you understand me to be asking for next time?” Then explain your understanding of their concern.

When their challenge reveals a mistake, correct the record for anyone using it and acknowledge the check during that conversation. Review the next update against the clarified requirement. If disagreement remains, record the expectation and unresolved objection, and use the appropriate review process.

Employee

If you are the team member

State your objection: “The request said to compare the options. I understood you would choose. Here is the message.” Ask whether the feedback concerns the work itself or a requirement for the next assignment.

If you expect the request to cause a problem, explain the likely effect and suggest an alternative. Confirm your manager's decision and what you are expected to do. If the issue remains unresolved, ask how to request a review and record the exchange.

Questions that come up

What if they dispute every piece of feedback?

Compare the exchanges: were your examples accurate, expectations known, and objections resolved? If the person repeatedly changes the subject, identify that action and return to the unresolved issue.

Do we have to agree before the conversation ends?

When authorized to set the requirement, explain your decision and how to request a review. If you need to investigate first, agree on the next action.
