How to Calibrate with Your Manager

Run a regular calibration rhythm with your manager from your first week, so each check-in produces course correction rather than status. Set it up yourself and come prepared.

Developing

Start here. Build the foundation.
  1. 1

In your first week, propose a recurring check-in with your manager rather than waiting for one to appear, weekly to start, and send the invitation yourself. A standing slot you own means you never have to find a reason to ask for time.

  2. 2

Before each check-in, write a short account of where you are against the expectations you confirmed: done, in progress, blocked. Bring that, not a recap you assemble live. The prep is what makes the half hour worth your manager's time.

Proficient

Build consistency and rhythm.
  1. 3

In the meeting, ask directly how you are doing and what you should change, rather than only reporting status. The question is uncomfortable early and cheap early: feedback in week three costs far less to act on than the same feedback in month three.

  2. 4

Act on the feedback and show the change by the next check-in. Feedback you heard and dropped teaches your manager to stop giving it, so name the change you made when you next meet.

Mastered

Operate at the highest level.
  1. 5

At the end of your ramp, run a review with your manager of what you set out to do, what you delivered, and what to carry into the ongoing role. Write down what you both agree to keep, so the ramp closes on a shared read rather than trailing off.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid the common failure modes.
  • The check-in keeps getting cancelled and never rebooked because you do not own the invitation. Send it yourself and reschedule rather than skip.
  • You report status and never ask for feedback. Add the direct question every time: what should I change.
  • The same feedback comes up twice. You heard it but did not act. Make the change visible before the next meeting.
