How to Diagnose Why the Wrong Behavior Wins

When the target and its consequences are written up but the right behavior still is not sticking, run the consequence contest. Compare the competing behaviors on timing and certainty, name what the desired one lacks, write the verdict as consequences, and teach peers the same question.

Developing

Start here. Build the foundation.
  1. 1

Name the specific old behavior being replaced, not an ideal, then compare how soon each pays off. The old behavior often rewards immediately, like a call that feels productive, while the desired one pays later, in a deal's outcome weeks out. State the timing gap you find.

  2. 2

Compare how certain each payoff is. The old behavior may pay off on every call, while the desired one only pays when it changes the result. A sure thing beats a maybe even when the maybe is larger, so name which behavior is more reliable.

Proficient

Build consistency and rhythm.
  1. 3

Check the desired behavior against three properties, positive, immediate, and certain, using the comparison as input, and name the one it is missing. Stopping at 'the reward is weak' diagnoses nothing; naming the missing property points at the fix.

  2. 4

Put the contest in one sentence: what the old behavior delivers now and for sure, against what the new one delivers later and maybe. State it as competing consequences, never as weak willpower.

Mastered

Operate at the highest level.
  1. 5

When a peer calls a stuck behavior an attitude problem, walk them through the same timing-and-certainty comparison. Keep at it until the comparison becomes their default question. The skill has landed when they diagnose a consequence contest instead of judging character.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid the common failure modes.
  • You call it a willpower or attitude problem. That skips the comparison. Go back to timing and certainty before you talk about the person.
  • You compare the new behavior to an ideal. Compare it to the specific old behavior it is actually losing to.
  • You stop at 'the reward is weak.' Name which of positive, immediate, or certain is missing, or you have not diagnosed anything.
