Build Team Capability Through Delegation

Delegation is how a team grows, when assignments are chosen for what they teach, not only what they get done. Match work to each person's growth edge, pushing them just past their current range, and pair the stretch with enough support to succeed. Debrief finished work to lock in the lesson so the next assignment starts higher, and hand over your own strong work to build depth the team lacks. Keep a map of who can do what, and aim assignments at the skills only one person holds.

Measurable Behaviors

Behaviors are optimized to be directly observable for evidence-based skill tracking.

Debrief finished work to lock in the lesson

Reviews what worked and what to change when a piece lands, and records the takeaway so the next assignment starts higher.

Hand over your own strong work to build depth

Delegates high-value work you do well and accepts a temporary dip in polish, so the team is not dependent on you alone.

Match assignments to each person's growth edge

Chooses some work for the skill it will build, pushing a person just past their current range in a capability the team needs.

Set the stretch up to succeed, not to sink

Pairs a stretch with context, access, and check-in support proportional to its size, so it develops the person instead of sinking them.

Track who can do what and delegate to close the gaps

Keeps a current map of capabilities, marks single points of failure, and aims assignments at closing them.

What a Team That Grows Through Delegation Looks Like

Mastery means people take on bigger work each cycle because assignments are chosen for what they build, stretches come with real support and a debrief, and single points of failure close as depth grows. No critical piece depends on the manager alone.
