How to Select and Prioritize Target Segments Using Intent and Fit Data

Decide which audiences deserve campaign investment before writing the brief. Define customer fit, add active-intent signals, rank segments, secure sales agreement, and update the criteria after each cycle.

Developing

Start here. Build the foundation.
  1. 1

Before assigning budget, write the segment's fit criteria and remove accounts that fail them. Keep the definition and rationale in the shared workspace; every included account should pass the same test, and a teammate should reproduce the result.

  2. 2

Once fit is established, add intent signals, record their source and timing, and prioritize the fit-and-intent segments. Hold fit-only accounts for nurture; move accounts showing both into the active tier.

Proficient

Build consistency and rhythm.
  1. 3

Before the segment review, apply a written conversion-likelihood rule that connects each tier to budget and personalization. Ask another marketer to apply it; their ranking should match, and the tiers should change campaign treatment.

  2. 4

Before launch approval, review the tiered list with sales against territory, pipeline, and relationship knowledge, then record agreement or named changes. Sales should explain the priorities before spend begins.

Mastered

Operate at the highest level.
  1. 5

After each cycle, compare cost per opportunity by segment and update the fit, intent, or tiering rule where it predicted poorly. Record what changed and why; the next target list should apply the revision and trace it to the prior result.

Common Pitfalls

Avoid the common failure modes.
  • Treating firmographic fit as active demand. A company can match the customer profile without exploring a purchase. Keep fit-only accounts in nurture until intent or another agreed signal justifies campaign spend.
  • Ranking segments from private judgment. If another marketer cannot reproduce the tiers, prioritization resets with every campaign. Write the criteria and connect each tier to a clear investment level.
  • Sending the list to sales without securing agreement. Receipt is not alignment. Review the list together, record objections as new fit information, and confirm the final choice before launch.
