Coach a Skill Inside the 1:1

The 1:1 is a natural place to develop one skill over time without turning the meeting into a review. Development is a different conversation from status and from evaluation, and it needs protected time. Reserve a few minutes each meeting for the report's growth, agree a single focus, and tie it to the goals they care about. Return to the same focus across meetings so it builds, and hand the report the plan as they grow into running it themselves.

Measurable Behaviors

Behaviors are optimized to be directly observable for evidence-based skill tracking.

Agree one skill or goal to work on

Picks a single focus with the report so effort concentrates instead of spreading thin across many.

Carry the same development thread across several 1:1s

Returns to the same growth focus across meetings so development builds over weeks rather than restarting.

Hand the report ownership of their development plan

Helps the report take over their own development plan, setting and tracking growth with your support.

Set aside part of the 1:1 for development

Protects time for the report's growth so development is a standing part of the meeting, not only status.

Tie the development thread to the person's own goals

Connects the focus to the report's own career goals so the growth they invest in serves where they want to go.

What Coaching Inside the 1:1 Looks Like

One development focus carries across several 1:1s with progress recorded, tied to the report's own goals rather than only this quarter's project. The growth conversation stays forward-looking rather than a verdict on past work, and over time the report increasingly owns and drives the plan.
