Pinpoint the Controlling Factor Across the Performance System

Most performance problems carry several contributing factors, and only one or two actually control the behavior. Sort candidate causes by type, separate a genuine knowledge gap from an environmental block, and test each surviving cause against what was actually observed. Name the one factor whose removal would change the behavior most, and a recurring factor becomes a pattern the team can reuse.

Measurable Behaviors

Behaviors are optimized to be directly observable for evidence-based skill tracking.

Build a reusable diagnostic pattern from recurring root causes

Records a recurring controlling factor and the path that found it so a colleague can apply it without walking the original case.

Distinguish a knowledge gap from an environmental block

Tests whether the person could do it today if their job depended on it, separating a cannot-do cause from a can-but-blocked one.

Isolate the factor that most controls the behavior

Names the one cause whose removal would change the behavior most and explains why it outranks the others.

Sort candidate causes into information, resources, and incentives

Assigns every possible cause to a category so the fix can match the type instead of guessing.

Test each candidate cause against the available evidence

Checks each cause against what was observed and drops any that has no observation behind it.

What Mastery of Root-Cause Analysis Looks Like

A mastered analysis sorts every candidate cause by type, labels each as a knowledge gap or an environmental block, and drops any cause with no observation behind it. It names one controlling factor and defends why it outranks the others, and turns a recurring cause into a documented pattern a colleague could apply without the original case.
